Easter Vacation Anyone? The MOST EXHAUSTIVE Packing List you will find!💼✈️🚢🚉📑

How does the above picture happen, you may be wondering…How do 2 helpless parents go “semi-backpacking” through Europe with 3 kids (ages, 8,5 and 7 months?) That’s a really freaken good question. This picture will go down in history because it was the time when we thought it would be a cool experience to ride the train along the Italian countryside from Rome to Milan. The “only” problem was how were we getting about 13 bags and several miscellaneous pieces including a bulky stroller and a carseat and 3 young kids, from the Roman Cab down the stairs to our terminal, on to the train, off of the train and into a Milanese taxi. Honestly we were FLIPPING! Actually, Craig was flipping 😈and I was calmly 💁🏽trying to remind him that we DIDN’T have a choice. We would just have to figure it out, no sense in obsessing during the days leading up to this challenge. How did we end up doing it? Slowly. Very slowly. As in we would move all 18 pieces 20 feet at a time and the kids were FORCED to pitch in. In 2 weeks it was the only time that we would be helpless and we lived to tell the tale. Eventually we got on the train and had a great train ride and arrived in Milan!

What is the point of this story? My point is if you are planning a vacation you need to have PLAN! A packing plan. A really good one.👍🏽These days, with 4 kids, I pack at least a week in advance if I can swing it, sometimes I can not. Things ALWAYS pop up the day and night before a trip, and I need to be prepared for anything…say a last minute trip to the pediatrician for an ear check in case of a sudden ear infection or runny nose👂🏽🔦 or the Mom that was supposed to carpool and drive my kid that week bailed 🚗❌. What I’ve created over the years, is our Shapiro Packing List. I have amended it, edited it, added to it and subtracted to it depending on what stage we were in, how many kids we had, or if we were in a baby stage.👶🏻🍼

Everytime I am getting ready for a trip I print out my list.🖨📑 I carry it from room to room with me and literally go.down.the.list. and check off each item as I pack. 📜🖋✅ Inevitably there will be things you can’t pack at that moment, or they aren’t accessible in the moment, or are in a different part of your house and you are too lazy to get it. On the back of the list I keep a new list of things I need to grab and add. As the trip draws near, and my panic level rises,😨📈which is every single time, I really rely on this list as my sanity.🙌🏽📑 What I found was a big part of my stress level was being afraid of leaving something behind and not being completely prepared. When I am in a packing fury I also found that my brain doesn’t necessarily think right. I’m in a nervous fog and I am forgetting things or making bad decisions. So what I find helpful is to do the thinking before hand…make myself notes and use my list, that way no thinking is involved. I can be confident that the thinking was already done for me. With my list I literally DON’T THINK! I put the tv on and catch up on Wendy Williams 👩🏾📺and I start to go down the line, KNOWING that everything WE need is on the list. Now of course my list may not be exactly what your list would look like. But you can definitely take from my list what you need and shape it into YOUR perfect list! Through the years I’ve emailed my list out and the very next thing they do after thanking me is people loooove to make jokes about what is currently on my list! (jibbets were necessary for crocs back in 2008!!! And yes my list said pink, purple, teal crocs-it was very specific and yes we needed all colors for the beach) Whatever! Happy critiquing!

So I broke down my list by person and by topic. Depending on the trip we are taking I may or may not bring everything on the list. If thats the case I just ❌it off right away. There is nothing like the feeling of every line being ❌ off and screaming DONE! Stay tuned in a few weeks for my post about PERFECT PACKING for a family of 6 or for however meany you have. I will show methods on how I pack and my little secrets and what I found very helpful! 💑👭👬💼💼💼💼💼💼💡So without further ado…

So there you have it! I will be waiting for the texts and emails asking what does this or that mean. Yes…Craig and I wear eye masks, religiously since we went on Spring Break to Acapulco senior year of Cornell🏖and we found them in the gift shop during a layover in Dallas. 😎😎 One last thing. I play this game with myself. The earlier in the week I can say YES to this game the better I feel and the less stressed I am. It’s called “if someone pulled a gun to my head 🙆🏽🔫 and said you must leave on vacation right this minute 🛫” could I walk out the door with everything packed and ready to go. My goal is to say YES at least 2 days before the trip that way the day before I can relax, get beautified and go about business as usual… 💅🏽💇🏽 Imagine the time it took to pack for this trip 👇🏾😳

  1. Love this! So true, the earlier we are packed, the lower my stress levels! In Europe at this moment, I feel your pain with the trains. And we are only lugging two kiddos and gear!
