I’ll never forget the time when Hailey was on stage mid performance and my phone ran out of memory. I was sooooo devastated! 😱😭 Her solos were coming up!!!👧🏻🎙I feverishly started deleting old videos and pictures and my storage would not budge!!! Wtf!!! It kept saying “cannot take another picture storage full”. The person sitting next to me whispered “did you delete your recently deleted!??”🗑🗑 I had never heard of it because I think it was part of the new iOS upgrade at the time. Anyway, I deleted that HUGE folder, which took about a minute or two, I almost thought my phone froze. Lo and behold I gained back a very LARGE chunk of storage and I went on to happily videoing my daughters performance just in the nick of time! 🕡🕗🕠🕖
I’ll show both ways using my phone as an example. I have a 120 gig phone. It lists available as only 113 because I think operating system/ iOS takes up a big chunk. Once again to review your where you are at for storage (good to have an idea that way you never run into that annoying “can’t take another photo message”) there are 2 ways. First way is you go to GENERAL>STORAGE AND ICLOUD USAGE> and then you will see your USED and AVAILABLE and if you choose “manage storage” it breaks it down by topic. Another way to see your storage is to go to SETTINGS>GENERAL>ABOUT and look at “AVAILABLE” amount. Both ways show I only have 53.6 GB out of 113 left. So about half is used. Not terrible but since Im anal I like to keep my storage clear. Also I have a phone with a lot of storage if you don’t have a lot of gigs then even a few gigs can make a huge difference.
Usually your top 3 biggest offenders will be photos/videos, messages, and music. I already wrote a post about changing your message options. So here my photos are taking up 31.1 gb.
But weirdly enough if you went to my camera roll I only have 330 pictures. Which wouldn’t make sense…soooooo here’s where that SNEAKY recently deleted folder comes in!
Now that you know how much your photo/video section is taking up, then check your recently deleting folder and if you have a large amount of pictures in it then it’s time to PERMANENLY DELETE them!!! So you open up the folder then top right corner click SELECT and then bottom right corner DELETE ALL. (or you can pick and choose which ones…) It will give you a final prompt saying “These items will be deleted. This action cannot be undone. Do you want to continue then press delete 3,713 items (in my case)
Then VOILA!!! I went back to check in my storage and iCloud usage section in settings and I noticed my AVAILABLE jumped up to 77GB! Yay! I just gained 24GB for some people thats a whole phone. So deleting the RECENTLY DELETED folder DOES MATTER AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽🗑
If you want more info this article is a quick read and it explains the recently deleted folder, why it is important and how to delete it…
Anyway that’s another sneaky way to get back more storage! 😬👏🏽👍🏽
