My 1st Political Experience with NY State Senator Elaine Phillips- A Republican (Gasp😱) Who is Pro Choice and Stands With Planned Parenthood πŸ‘πŸ½πŸ˜ƒπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈπŸ’—UPDATED- SHE IS NOT

UPDATED AS OF JULY 1, 2017- When push came to shove Sen. Phillips was a disappointment. She voted like I thought she would- NOT IN SUPPORT FOR PLANNED PARENTHOOD. I guess it was too good to be true.

Before I discuss the meeting with NY State Senator Elaine Phillips I want to give a little background info bare with me. Chances are you have seen a political post/rant or two or 10 or 50+ of mine in the last 34 days since President Trump was inaugurated. 😱

Admittedly πŸ™‹πŸ½and accusinglyπŸ™πŸ½ I was told I was late to the political gameβŒ›οΈ, but since then I’ve showed up ready to play ball. ✊🏽Put me in coach, I’m ready to play, πŸ™‹πŸ½and if you know me I play to win! What’s the saying? Better late then never?πŸ’ͺ🏽 I guess I was too busy raising 4 young kids, πŸ‘πŸ‘¬enjoying my life, dealing with nonsense dramas surrounding life in a small town 🏑and then dealing with the trauma and PTSD fallout😩 in the last 2 years after having a termination for medical reasonsπŸ₯πŸ‘ΆπŸ» (the other side of abortion that you never really hear much about). Hi πŸ™‹πŸ½ yup that’s me and I’m a poster child!

Why me? 😀 Why did I get pregnant with a child with Trisomy 9, such a rare diagnosis. πŸ™…πŸ½I wanted this pregnancy so so bad, πŸ™πŸ½why did God put me in this position to have to terminate. Well, I guess why not me? πŸ€·πŸ½β€β™€οΈI decided that Mackenzie’s ⭐️life will not be in vain and I will fight for the rights of mothers like me who are faced with making the worst heartbreaking and traumatic decisions of their lives. I also stand up for women around the world and America that need to have abortions to make the right decisions for their families. No judgement, just unwavering support. God had other plans for me and blessed me with the absolute love of my life Skyler.Β

Last month I attended my first Planned Parenthood event at Thyme in Roslyn with the Planned Parenthood Nassau Action group.

I didn’t know much about the organization but I figured we had 1 thing in common the words “supporting safe abortions” so I decided to check it out. I wrote up my post here and learned so much I never knew.

After my amazing trip with my daughters to Australia over Xmas vacation I decided that in the New Year I would take a step back from hectic and stressful life as I knew it and take some time to relax and really connect with my family. 😴

As the first days of Trumps πŸ‘±πŸ»πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έpresidency trudged forward I became glued😱😳😡😲😀😑. That’s right my crew was replaced with my friends at CNN JakeπŸ‘¨πŸ», AndersonπŸ‘΄πŸ», BrookeπŸ‘©πŸΌ, WolfπŸ‘΄πŸ», Jim and JimπŸ‘¨πŸ»πŸ‘¨πŸ», GloriaπŸ‘΅πŸ», DonπŸ‘¨πŸΎ, VanπŸ‘¨πŸΎ and the list goes on.

During commercial breaks I would switch over to Fox News🐍 only to find that they were either always in Commercial Breaks, covering unnewsworthy stories, or filling in their hours with filler fluff. There’s only so many ways you can fill the airwaves 24 hours a day with fake news when your trying to cover for your President and stay on his good side. Glenn Gutfeld…I just can’t.πŸ‘ŠπŸ½ But I digress!!

35 days into the presidency and who would’ve known the new 2017 Alethea would emerge as a political commentator! Not me!!! While yes, it is true I’ve watched close to 100% of Spicers press conferences and mostly all of Trumps and hours a day watching the news I will say that my house has never been cleaner, and I’ve played countless hours playing Zingo and Memory and teaching ABCs and bonding with my boys while getting politically edumacated lol. πŸ“œπŸ“‘πŸ“ŠπŸ—žπŸ“°πŸ“ The girls, I’ve tried to tread more lightly with when the News is on and discussing topics because I don’t want to scare them in topics that I’m shitting my pants on. They are at an impressionable age and I’m having a hard time being neutral and it really goes against my love of America by telling them that their President is a bad hombre. πŸ‘Ή

Anyway I digress again…

So after ranting and raving for the last few weeks I decided to put my money where my mouth was. πŸ€‘ What is the use in complaining if you aren’t willing to do anything. ❓❓I truly believe that our 45th President, his Cabinet, his administration, and the majority of Republicans in Congress are a REAL AND ACTIVE THREAT TO ME, MY FAMILY, OUR DEMOCRACY, AND TO ALL THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION!!!Β

So with that negative sentiment I decided I can not just sit there and yell at Kellyanne Conartist and Reince Creepus from my couch anymore the time had come for me to take action. I have never felt more of a civic duty in my life then now. Perfect timing now that I’ve gotten a little opportunity of a breather with my 4th in a partial separation class. Truth is the last 8 years of my adult life I have felt very safe and protected. πŸ˜” I never felt my social liberties being jeopardized. From my naive (but not wrong) point of view I felt like we were making strides- the LGBTQ community finally made advances with equal rights, I was able to safely have an abortion in NY yet cry for women around America who could not, I felt like living in a NY bubble you see diversity all day everyday. My mother πŸ‘©πŸ»and brother πŸ‘¦πŸ»thankfully got insurance through Obama Care. So what was there really to complain about? But now after seeing the hatred and vitriol πŸ‘ΏπŸ‘ΉπŸ‘Ί and lies and deceit that I have witnessed in these first 35 days with this administration I’m really at a loss. I guess I’m not alone… “Pfingsten is not alone in his politics-induced anxiety β€” it’s so common it’s been given an unofficial name: Post-Election Stress Disorder. Mental health professionals around the country, especially those working in Democratic strongholds, report a stream of patients coming in with anxiety and depression related to β€” or worsened by β€” the blast of daily news on the new administration.” Β Full article here

So instead of sitting there bitching I decided to go to my first ever political event. πŸ›πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ I showed up at State Senator Elaine Phillips office, alone and nervous and meekly checked in at the desk saying I was there for the town hall event. My bad. I showed the lady the email I received and she informed me there was a Planned Parenthood event at 3. Duhhhh! πŸ€¦πŸ½β€β™€οΈπŸ’“πŸ’“

I went outside and before long lots of pink ladies showed up. πŸ’“πŸ’—πŸ’–πŸ’I did NOT get the memo and was actually under the weather (sick but determined) and still basically in my pajamas because I expected to be sitting in the back row of an auditorium not at a round table discussion of 15 😳😳😡. But then again if you know me, it’s sweatpants πŸ‘–βœ–οΈand ponytails πŸ‘±πŸΎβ€β™€οΈall day everyday so I guess I was just “being the true me”. πŸ€·πŸ½β€β™€οΈ Right? Lol right.

Senator Elaine Phillips warmly addressed the crowd and welcomed everyone for coming.

She started off by giving a little background information, with tears in her eyes πŸ˜₯, about how she grew up in a rural poor town in Pennsylvania and “how Planned Parenthood was one of the only places to go to get medical assistance and it was GREAT”. She went on to acknowledge that she is affiliated with a party (Republican) that often times does not share the pro-choice sentiment and she has no problem standing up to them and that when they asked her to run she made them absolutely AWARE that she was pro-choice and surprisingly she said no one ever in the party asked her to change her beliefs. πŸ‘πŸ½That received head nods and looks of shocked approval 😏from the round table members. President of the PPH Nassau County Chapter JoAnn Smith, immediately thanked her and noted that she will “be an incredible Voice for us”. She also acknowledged that Senator Phillips is the only female Senator from Long Island and the only female republican that is pro choice, to which Phillips said maybe the problem is we need more women in office along side me! πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸ’ΌπŸ›πŸ’—

For the following hour the women took turns telling the Senator why PPH is important to them and why we need her voice in Albany to support 3 central issues.

1. Protect publicly funded reproductive health care: the action is SUPPORT the family planning grant with state dollars to keep New Yorkers healthy. Any attempt to cut funding for these programs would have a devastating impact on patient access to essential preventative healthcare

2. Ensure continued access to safe and legal abortion in New York State: the action is to ask your senator to PASS RHA to preserve our access to safe legal abortion

3. Strengthen contraceptive access: the action is to ask our senator Phillips to PASS the CCCA (comprehensive contraceptive coverage act) this session to protect her access to affordable effect of contraception

I’ve discussed my TFMR (termination for medical reasons in person with friends and family and on fb before but never in a public setting with strangers) and I felt like it was important to tell my story to the Senator and represent women from our state πŸ—½who don’t have great health insurance and who can’t afford women’s health care and why PP is so very important and can not be defunded. πŸ’°βš”οΈ I was moved to tears, as was the room, by another young woman who bravelyπŸ™ŒπŸΎ, through tears and shaking hands shared her story of TFMR along with sono pictures and her plea to the Senator to please support PPH. The Senator was steadfast with her support for PPH but acknowledged that at the end of the day it all comes down to money and budgets. πŸ’°πŸ’°πŸ’°She promised to thoroughly read through the information packet she was givenπŸ“, and if she had any issues with wording or found parts she disagreed with she would follow up with PPH and allow for further discussion.

I found Senator Phillips very warm, friendly and empathetic. I even found out we have something in common, 2 of her kids go to Cornell! Winner! πŸ†We ended the very cordial informative meeting taking a professional group shot by her staff πŸŽ₯, where I was shoved forward to stand right next to the gracious and honorable Senator Phillips in my homeless looking rags with my sweatshirt reading “Im allergic to mornings”. Awesome. 😐 Something like this would only happen to me! 🀣

Stay tuned to tomorrow’s event when I Sprint πŸšπŸ’¨over to meet with Representative Tom Suozzi, perhaps this time I’ll step it up from my grey waffle sweatpants to my black high sheen Moto leggings from Bandier! πŸ˜ƒπŸ˜‡πŸ˜ŠπŸ’πŸ½
