Friday: Day 120

Comey will testify before Senate committee in an open hearing. (WaPo) The hearing will occur after Memorial Day, committee leaders said. SET YOUR DVRS and ๐Ÿฟ

The investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia has expanded to include a current White House official. (WaPo )The senior adviser under scrutiny by investigators is someone close to the president, additionally people who were previously part of the Trump campaign and administration are being investigated.
In meeting with Russian foreign minister and ambassador, official says Trump called former FBI Director Comey a “nut job” and said firing him eased the pressure of the Russia investigation. (NYT) Exact quote being “I just fired the head of the FBI. He was crazy, a real nut job. I faced great pressure because of Russia. Thatโ€™s taken off.” Russia also offered Congress the transcripts!

Thursday: Day 119

Trump’s transition team knew former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn was under investigation before hiring him but hired him anyway. (NYT) Trump made Flynn his national security adviser anyway, giving him access to nearly every secret held by American intelligence agencies. Great job!!!
During a press conference with Colombian President Santos, Trump denies collusion with Russia. (NPR) When asked the direct question he interrupted and said “NO, NO NEXT QUESTION!” He only took 2 questions it was a bust. Trump denies telling Comey to back off the Flynn investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Trump says the special counsel investigation “hurts our country,” calling the probe the “single greatest witch hunt” in political history. He suggested that the investigation, now being led by former FBI Director Robert Mueller, was motivated by an attempt to tarnish his election victory last year. The deputy attorney general appointed a special counsel to oversee probe of Russian interference in election. Rod Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Bob Mueller to oversee the investigation. Mueller will take command of the prosecutors and FBI agents who are working on the far reaching Russia investigation. Trump asked James Comey to shut down the Michael Flynn investigation in a February memo he wrote shortly after meeting with Trump. โ€œI hope you can let this go,โ€ Trump told Comey. The request is the clearest evidence that Trump tried to directly influence the Justice Department and FBI investigations. Comey kept detailed notes of his meetings with Trump, documenting what he perceived as improper efforts to influence a continuing investigation. An FBI agentโ€™s notes are widely held up in court as credible evidence of conversations. (New York Times)

Gingrich urged Trump to shut down White House press room in order to send a message to the country โ€œthat the media is a corrupt institution and [Trump] is tired of being harassed by people whose only interest is making him look bad.โ€ (Politico)

Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer says “history is watching” and “the country is being tested in unprecedented ways” in the wake of a New York Times story that says President Donald Trump asked former FBI Director James Comey to call off an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn. Trump revealed highly classified information to Russian diplomats during their Oval Office meeting last week, which has jeopardized a critical source of intelligence on the Islamic State. Trumpโ€™s decision to disclose information risks cooperation from an ally that has access to the inner workings of the Islamic State. A US official said Trump โ€œrevealed more information to the Russian ambassador than we have shared with our own allies.โ€ (Washington Post)

North Korea successfully test-fired a new type of ballistic missile, signaling an advance in their ICBM development. North Korea said the new โ€œmedium long-rangeโ€ missile is capable of carrying a large nuclear warhead, warning that the United Statesโ€™ military bases in the Pacific were within its range. Friday: Day 113

In a tweet, Trump threatened to cancel all future press briefings for the โ€œsake of accuracy,โ€ saying itโ€™s โ€œnot possibleโ€ to always tell the truth. While the White House canโ€™t get its story straight about the firing of FBI director James Comey, Trump has offered his solution: cancel all press briefings. (CNN) If that happens I will be devastated for the country and for myself and I will also be more available for lunches lol

In another tweet, Trump warned James Comey against leaking to the press, suggesting there are โ€œtapesโ€ of their private conversations. Itโ€™s unclear if any tapes exist. Regardless, Comey is โ€œnot worried about any tapes,โ€ a CNN source said, adding that โ€œif there is a tape, thereโ€™s nothing [Comey] is worried aboutโ€ that could be on it. Trump met with Putinโ€™s top diplomats at the White House one day after Trump fired his FBI director, who was overseeing an investigation into Russiaโ€™s interference in the 2016 presidential election. Sergey Lavrov first met with Rex Tillerson earlier in the day and sarcastically acknowledged the dismissal of James Comey by saying โ€œWas he fired? Youโ€™re kidding. Youโ€™re kidding.โ€ The Kremlin said Trumpโ€™s firing of Comey will have no effect on bilateral relations between the two countries. Trump fired James Comey on the recommendation of Jeff Sessions. In a letter dated Tuesday to Comey, Trump concured โ€œwith the judgment of the Department of Justice that [Comey is not] able to effectively lead the bureau.โ€ Earlier today, the FBI notified Congress that Comey misstated key findings involving the Clinton email investigation during testimony, saying that only a โ€œsmall numberโ€ of emails had been forwarded to disgraced congressman Anthony Weiner, not the โ€œhundreds and thousandsโ€ heโ€™d claimed in his testimony.
